“Dastan Aik Ahd Ki”: A Literary Tribute to Dr. Nasir Abbas Nayyar at Punjab University Library

A remarkable literary event titled “Dastan Aik Ahd Ki” was held at the Punjab University Library, celebrating the literary contributions and critical legacy of Dr. Nasir Abbas Nayyar, one of the leading intellectuals, critics, and fiction writers of our time. The event was hosted by the Punjab University Library under the supervision of Dr. Muhammad Haroon Usmani, Chief Librarian. The program was conceptualized and designed by Mushtaq Ahmed, senior faculty member at the Department of Urdu, Oriental College. His deep affection and intellectual sincerity were reflected in the thoughtful title and overall spirit of the event.
Dr. Nasir Abbas Nayyar has, over the past one and a half decades, significantly influenced Urdu literature through his courageous and insightful criticism. Known for bridging complex Western literary theories with Urdu criticism, he has established literary criticism as a robust intellectual discipline in its own right—one that raises questions not only about literature but also society. His work dispels many misconceptions of literary history and breaks stagnant notions with clarity and elegance.
His writings—rich in diversity, intellectual depth, and critical boldness—have brought new dimensions to Urdu criticism. His recent works even reimagine the language of criticism itself—moving away from purely logical expression toward a creative, meaningful mode of writing that connects with general readers. His fiction, running parallel to his critical work, transports readers to unknown realms and unfamiliar logics, creating a world of wonder and intellectual exploration.
The event featured speeches from prominent literary figures including: Affzal Ahmed (CEO, Sang-e-Meel Publications), Dr. Najeeb JamalRana Mehboob AkhtarMarghoob Hussain TahirShaheen AbbasGhafar ShehzadShanawar Ishaq, and Shaista HasanDr. Haroon UsmaniDr. Aurangzeb Niazi, and Dr. Shahzaib also spoke eloquently about Dr. Nayyar’s work. Special audio messages from India were received from Khalid Javed and Sarwar-ul-Huda, as well as from Umair Ahmed Khan, who translated Dr. Nayyar’s book “Postcolonialism: In the Context of Urdu” into English. Their thoughtful messages were acknowledged with heartfelt gratitude.

More than 200 students remained present throughout the event, which lasted from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Many students brought copies of Dr. Nayyar’s critical and fictional works to be signed, signaling the strong connection between the new generation and his writings.
